Bakersfield is the county seat and is the largest city in Kern County and has long
been the place to go for registering mining claims, proving up assessment work
and proving homestead claims. Further Bakersfield has had the Bakersfield
College since the early 50's and many of the Burroughs grads from Ridgecrest
have found it convenient to attend there the first two years of their college
education. It has a broad assembly of services and businesses and also
has a fine River Park where the Kern River flows below the bluffs. In
Oildale there are multitudes of oil wells and I understand that now there may
be a refinery. I have not returned to Bakersfield since 1966 so if anyone
wants to help put the facts right I sure would appreciate it.
