High Desert Memories - A Hometown Journal Commemorating Ridgecrest California |
Sherman E. Burroughs High School |

Extracted from the 1947 El Burro |
View of the base taken from 'B' mountain. It is one of the earlier photos of
this area in this website. |
Aerial view showing the high schools location. Wasn't much there but the primary
concrete buildings and bare sand. |
The Administration building with contractors equipment still on site. Note:
There is no landscaping or trees. |

The preparation and planting of grass and trees around the campus was a student self
help program. |

In the beginning . . . . |
There were no schools and something had to be done immediately. There
were a myriad of military and civilian families expected aboard the station so
it was imperative to build schools to support them. At first the school
buildings were quonset huts. This was only a temporary measure so there follows
a pictorial history of the building of our first real high school called
Burroughs after the Commanding Officer of the base Captain Sherman E, Burroughs. |
What better Icon to use for a high school called Burroughs in the middle of
the Mojave Desert then the . . . . . Burro!!! |
So then here it is Sherman E. Burroughs High School. The home of our alma mater
for 13 years. The students of the 40's and 50's remember this campus
with fondness. We all had some enjoyable and some sad times here.
Above all else it is what we remember as OUR high school!! |
Grading the track Note: No "B" on the mountain yet. |
Putting lights up on the field. |
Surveying the area to put parts of the field in their proper places. |
Heavy equipment on site and ready to go to work |
Getting grass on the field requires a lot of work. In this case students are
doing a self help "sand" preparation project. |
Service with a smile!!! |
Cards anyone?? |
The Stall is open. What'll you have?? |

It is tradition that the freshman class goes out to B mountain each year and refreshes
the B with a coat of white paint. It is obviously a tradition which
is enjoyed while doing. it started in the 40's and carries thru today. |
The only difference between the 40's and today is that now the pictures are in color!!! |
. . . and even today there stands a mountain with a big white B which proudly proclaims
that this is Burroughs High School Country and don't you forget it!!!! |
