High Desert Memories - A Hometown Journal Commemorating Ridgecrest California |
Cerro Gordo |

Discovered by Mexican Miners in 1864, but not widely known until 1867 when Silver
ore from the mines was displayed in Nevada. Cerro Gordo assisted in the
growth of Los Angeles by providing silver in exchange for goods and
services. The town is located at the 8500 foot level in the Inyo Mountains overlooking the Owens Valley. It is approached by a long steep winding road from the valley floor. It is privately owned and is being slowly restored as funds allow by the owner. There are some very well kept buildings on the town site. It is well worth the effort of a visit. |
