Taking its name from nearby Camp Independence established on Independence Day, July
4th 1862 - once named Little Pine - Independence is a warehouse of old western
history. The seat of INYO county since Feb. 3, 1866. Museum and
surviving historic sites illustrate the history and define the peoples who developed
this area over the last century.
Much in the way of geologic evidence of the upheavals which formed the present day
