High Desert Memories - A Hometown Journal Commemorating Ridgecrest California |
Wagon Wheel |
Located at the junction of the Ridgecrest to Trona and Red Mountain to Trona roads |

View on left is postcard representation of the Wagon Wheel I remember as a
youngster when we first came to the desert in 1943. There was a barbecue
pit out back where they used to barbecue the occasional burro. Your right
it wasn't much but it was an oasis to those travelers looking for a cold drink
and some talk about the desert. Additionally I am told there was the occasional
shady lady there too!!! I wouldn't know about that. Photos courtesy D'Laine Brannan |

Here is pretty much what is left of the old Wagon Wheel |

The "Y" is where the old Randsburg Rd "Y''d" off from the Trona/Ridgecrest road just
west of Poison Canyon. They revamped the road in the '60's to give it
that north turn into the Ridgecrest road. It was a restaraunt/bar/bawdy
house until the early '50's. ***I remember the Wagon Wheel. Do you remember the restaurant in Wild Rose Canyon? There's a story about a gent who got shotgunned using the outhouse. (Jealous husband, I think). My Grandma Eyre was a caretaker at the "Y" for a few years before it burned down. She knew the Smiths who owned it in it's last days. Nickola Johnson (1966) |
